The constituent assembly carried out its threat on 29 November: within
hours of meeting, 110 out of 130 delegates voted to declare congress in
"recess" until a referendum is held on the new constitution the
assembly is drafting. At that point, a date for new legislative elections will
presumably be revealed. In the meantime, congressional deputies will receive no
salary, no immunity from prosecution, and no compensation. One delegate from the
opposition, Prian, resigned his seat in protest while party leader, Alvaro Noboa,
and his wife, Anabella Azín, announced that they would no longer attend
sessions that will "destroy democracy". They will keep their seats.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1137 words.
