ECUADOR: Constituent assembly disbands congress

The constituent assembly carried out its threat on 29 November: within hours of meeting, 110 out of 130 delegates voted to declare congress in "recess" until a referendum is held on the new constitution the assembly is drafting. At that point, a date for new legislative elections will presumably be revealed. In the meantime, congressional deputies will receive no salary, no immunity from prosecution, and no compensation. One delegate from the opposition, Prian, resigned his seat in protest while party leader, Alvaro Noboa, and his wife, Anabella Azí­n, announced that they would no longer attend sessions that will "destroy democracy". They will keep their seats.
